The visa can be issued for single or multiple entries and for up to 10 years, but each visit is limited to 6 months.

You need a visa, not an eTA

Start here, because a great deal of what is written about this is wrong.

Canada lets citizens of some visa-required countries fly on an electronic travel authorisation instead of a visa. It is a real scheme, it is generous, and South Africa is not part of it. IRCC's published list of eligible visa-required countries runs: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Panama, the Philippines, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay. South Africa appears nowhere on it.

IRCC's own entry-requirement tool confirms it. Run for a South African passport, flying into a Canadian airport as a tourist, it returns a single answer: you need a visitor visa.

This matters more than the usual piece of outdated visa advice, because the two documents are nothing alike. An eTA costs CAD 7 and is usually approved within minutes. A visitor visa costs CAD 100 and takes weeks. Anyone who plans a trip believing the first figure will find out at check-in, when it is far too late.

What the visitor visa gives you

The visitor visa — formally a temporary resident visa — costs CAD 100. It can be issued for a single entry or for multiple entries, and for a validity period of up to 10 years.

Note the distinction, because people conflate the two: a ten-year visa does not let you stay for ten years. Each visit is limited to 6 months. The validity is how long you may keep arriving; the six months is how long you may stay once you do.

You need it to board your flight and again at the Canadian port of entry. It is not needed for flights within Canada or to leave.

On other costs, we are going to be honest rather than complete. Canada charges separately for some things alongside the application, biometrics among them. We have not been able to verify those amounts from IRCC directly, so we are not printing numbers we cannot stand behind. Confirm them on IRCC's fee list before you budget, and treat CAD 100 as the floor rather than the total.

The exceptions worth knowing

A few situations change the answer, and they catch out people who assume their circumstances are ordinary.

If you already hold a valid Canadian visitor visa, you do not need an eTA to fly. Keep travelling on the visa until it expires — which is exactly why a ten-year visa is worth having.

If you are a lawful permanent resident of the United States with proof such as a green card, IRCC's tool asks about this specifically and the answer differs. If that is you, run the tool for your own circumstances rather than relying on the general answer above.

Arriving by land or sea is not a way around it. Even travellers from the eligible countries still need a visitor visa if they drive from the US, or arrive by bus, train or boat — including a cruise ship, and including where they do not leave the ship. For a South African the answer is a visa whichever way you arrive.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents cannot use an eTA at all, and travel on a Canadian passport or a permanent resident card. Dual South African-Canadian citizens should read that carefully before booking.

What Canada is assessing

The structure will be familiar from a Schengen or UK application: a genuine temporary purpose, the means to fund the visit, and reasons to return. As with those, the strongest section of a South African application is usually the ties, and it is usually the section people put least into.

If your income is not a simple salary, the reasoning on our self-employed page and commission income page applies here too — the documents differ, the question being asked does not. If you have been refused a visa by any country before, declare it.

Where we can and cannot help

We prepare and check the application and assemble the supporting evidence. We cannot influence a decision or shorten a processing time, and we will tell you before you pay if we think your case is weak.

Where we are most useful on Canada is the boring part: making sure you are applying for the right thing. The eTA confusion is the single most common way South Africans waste money on this route.

Frequently asked questions

No. Canada allows citizens of certain visa-required countries to fly on an electronic travel authorisation, but South Africa is not among them. IRCC’s own entry-requirement tool, run for a South African passport, returns a visitor visa requirement.
